Monmouthshire Playschemes see a 37% increase in kids attending

The number of five to eleven year olds more than doubled at some of Monmouthshire’s playschemes during the 2010 summer holidays with a total of 2532 more visits than in 2009.

The schemes, at the four leisure centres, Bulwark Community Centre and Usk Memorial Hall, give children the chance to take part in activities such as arts and crafts, multi sports and plenty of exciting games.

All four weeks were themed and activities included arts and crafts, bouncy castle, treasure hunts, circus skills, talent shows, parachute games, daily swimming at the leisure centres, children’s fitness, multi sports, fruit smoothie bike, healthy food preparation and eating sessions and visits from Monmouthshire Libraries and the emergency services.

Richard Simpkins, who helps to coordinate the council-run playschemes, said:

“It’s great that so many children had fun at our six venues across Monmouthshire. Some of the most popular activities included the healthy food preparation sessions, fruit smoothie bike, children’s fitness, Dragon Sports, and fancy dress days.

“The children were also able to use our swimming pools as part of the scheme on a daily basis and this proved extremely popular”.

“It is thought that numbers increased as a result of a thorough marketing campaign and word spread about how much fun the sessions were and how affordable they are at £6.50 per child per day.”
