Monmouthshire schools take a lead on literacy

On Thursday 9th December 2010, Monmouthshire Local Education Authority will celebrate an award for exemplary practice in the literacy programme Read Write Inc. The first time any local authority has been recognised in such a way.

The programme enables every child to become a confident and fluent reader and this, in turn, helps them develop strong writing and speaking skills.

Andy Keep, Chief Officer for Children and Young People said:

“Read Write Inc. is a proven phonics programme that gets children reading and writing. I am delighted that it has been so successful in raising standards of literacy across the authority.”

Karen Christofi, Lead School Improvement Officer for Literacy is thrilled with the results of the programme:

“It has been a privilege to work so closely with Monmouthshire schools and to see the impact it is having on our children.”

Creator of the programme Ruth Miskin, one of the UK’s leading experts on teaching children to read and key advisor to the government, is the keynote speaker for the event.

Also attending the event is:

Paul Matthews, Monmouthshire County Council’s Chief Executive
Councillor Liz Hacket Pain, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People
Andy Keep, Chief Officer for Children and Young People
Representatives from  Monmouthshire schools
Visitors from other local authorities in Wales.

The event will also premier Monmouthshire’s DVD – ‘Succeeding together: developing confident learners’ – which demonstrates the effectiveness of a professional learning community working together to achieve success.
