More awards for Gower beaches

ANOTHER stunning Gower beach has beaten off Britain’s best beauty spots to win a prestigious honour.

Port Eynon has been named one of the UK’s top 15 family-friendly beaches in a survey carried out by Nivea Sun and the Royal Lifesaving Society.

Over 1,500 parents throughout the UK were questioned about beaches during the survey and the importance of factors such as cleanliness, safety, car parking facilities and toilets.

Britain’s beaches were then ranked according to factors parents deemed to be the most important and the best of the batch have been included in the Nivea Sun Family Beach Guide supported by the Royal Lifesaving Society. The guide also features top tips on beach safety, advice on safety in the sun and first aid pointers.

The only other Welsh beach to have made the top 15 is Whitesands at St David’s in Pembrokeshire.

High water quality, the presence of lifeguards in the summer months and the closeness of rock pools for children to explore at low tide are among the areas where the guide says Port Eynon scores particularly highly.

Cllr Richard Lewis, Gower Ward Member and Lord Mayor of Swansea, said: “Gower became the UK’s first ever designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956 and a huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes to ensure the peninsula lives up to its status.

“Beaches on Gower have won an enormous amount of awards over the years and this latest honour for Port Eynon comes in the wake of the beach yet again receiving a prestigious Blue Flag in recognition of its quality.

“Tourism makes a significant contribution to the economy of Swansea Bay and the accessibility of family-friendly beaches is vital if we’re to continue to attract both residents and visitors from further afield to our breathtaking coastline.”

Port Eynon beach landed Blue Flag status earlier this year along with Bracelet Bay, Caswell Bay, Langland Bay and Swansea Marina.

Other awards in the recent past have also seen Rhossili named Britain’s best beach and the best picnic spot in Wales.
