Mount Stuart Primary School Set to Expand

CardifCouncilCardiff Council’s Cabinet will be asked to approve plans to increase the capacity of Mount Stuart Primary school to 2 form entry in order to meet demand for more English-medium primary school places in the Butetown area of Cardiff.

Following a Cabinet meeting in June, a statutory notice was published to increase the capacity of Mount Stuart Primary School to enable up to 60 pupils to be admitted per year group. The statutory objection period finished on 1 August 2013, during which time no objections to the notice were received.

The provision of additional nursery places in permanent accommodation to meet increasing local demand from September 2015 was also agreed.

Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Julia Magill, said: “We are responding to a marked increase in demand for English-medium school places in the southern part of the city and these plans have been brought forward to ensure that there are sufficient places in the area in line with the pre-school population.

“This development will give us the opportunity to invest in Mount Stuart Primary and with the provision of Flying Start facilities, we will be able to further enhance the learning environment and provide children with excellent educational opportunities.”

Funding for the internal alterations and extension to the main school buildings will be met through a combination of the Council’s School Organisation Programme financial model, Flying Start Capital and Welsh Assembly 21st Century Schools capital funding.
