MP Wins Minister’s Support for Parent Carers of Disabled Children

Hywel FrancisAberavon MP Dr Hywel Francis, who is chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights and vice chair of the Parliamentary Carers Group, has lobbied successfully for better support for parent carers of disabled children.

Dr Francis said:

“The Minister for Children and Families has written to me and Paul Burstow MP following our recent meeting at which we argued for the need to strengthen legislation for parent carers in the Children and Families Bill and in the Care Bill.  I am pleased to report that the Minister agreed with our view that these carers should be supported and as a result the Children and Families Bill will be amended to ensure a more consistent approach to support for parent carers.”

Dr Francis added,

“I would like to thank Carers UK and parent carer groups for their support and assistance in putting our case to the Minister, and I look forward to our continued work together in support of carers.”
