Nathan boxes clever with local pupils

Welsh boxing hero Nathan Cleverly joined pupils at Heolddu Comprehensive School for a healthy workout this week in a drive to encourage more young people to get fit and active.

European and Commonwealth boxing champion Nathan swapped the boxing ring for the school sports hall, when he joined more than 40 pupils in one of their gruelling twice-weekly circuit training sessions.

The sessions are part of the Sport Caerphilly 5×60 programme funded by the Sports Council for Wales and are run by the school’s maths specialist and 6th Form head Jonathan Price, who is also a former Karate practitioner and weight training expert.

Jonathan commented, “Circuit training improves cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, whilst also having a positive impact on self-esteem, confidence, physical and mental well being. We also hope by getting fitter, our pupils will improve their academic achievements.”

Circuit sessions run from 3pm – 4:30pm every Wednesday and Friday at Heolddu Leisure Centre and are completely free. The school hopes the presence of this world-class sports celebrity and true role model will inspire more students to join the sessions.

As well as the Heolddu students, the school has issued an open invitation to teaching staff and the local community to commit-to-get-fit. Letters have also been sent to parents in the hope the 5×60 sessions will develop into a family affair, and improve on the general health of the local population. Sport Caerphilly Officer, Neil Roberts along with Jonathan Price and Heolddu Comp, would like to thank Nathan Cleverly for giving up his time, and wish him all the success in his future career.
