Neath East homes given a make-over

Work is underway to give properties in Neath East Renewal Area a face-lift.The first Group Repair Scheme to give homes in Florence Street and Briton Ferry Road an external make-over is underway.

Householders are taking advantage of the scheme, which enables them to access funding of up to £20,000 to rejuvenate their properties.

Many homes are having their roofs renewed, external walls rendered, new windows and doors fitted and drain pipes and guttering upgraded.

Neath Port Talbot Council leader said this is a fantastic opportunity for residents to obtain support to repair and maintain their homes at a fraction of the cost.

He said: “Dependant on your financial situation, you may not have to contribute at all.
“The maximum that is payable by any owner occupier who participates in the scheme is 10% of the total value of works.

“The Neath East Renewal Area was officially declared last Septmber. The ten year programme aims to enhance the quality of life for residents – not only by making improvements to the condition of the housing stock, but also by addressing social and environmental problems throughout the area.”

Sandfields East and Aberavon became the first renewal area in 2004, with the Upper Amman Valley securing status in 2006.

Since 2004, the two areas have benefited from more than £10.2m from the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) and £880,000 in additional funding.

Councillor Thomas added: “Following consultation with residents the Authority developed a number of initiatives it would like to undertake in Neath East in order to start regenerating the area.

“Through the declaration of this third Renewal Area, the authority aims to facilitate the creation of a sustainable local community for citizens to live, work and enjoy their leisure with high standards of housing, environment and improve quality of life for all people of all ages.”

A designated Neath East Renewal team are providing day-to-day operational links from their London Road premises, which are now officially open to the public.

The team will work alongside other organisations in the area to deliver the programme, including Keep Wales Tidy, Communities First, the Police, Fire Service, Care and Repair and Community Safety.
