New Birthing Beds for Maternity Unit

Birth chair cropNew birthing beds have been delivered to the Maternity Unit at the University Hospital of Wales to help mums become more mobile and comfortable during labour and birth.

The specially designed birthing beds will support mums-to-be to keep active during childbirth, and it is hoped the beds will positively help the psychological and physical well-being of the mum during the birthing process.

The beds will help women in labour to get into a range of more comfortable positions to make the birthing process more natural.

Suzanne Hardacre, Head of Midwifery and Gynaecological Services at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “Using these fabulous new beds means that women can maintain more upright positions such as sitting and kneeling which encourage natural birth.

“The new beds are proving really popular with both staff and mums-to-be, as they are easier to move around, give more choice of birth position and keep women comfortable as they move throughout the different stages of labour.”
