New Cardiff School Plans on Display

Plans for the new 21st Century secondary school in the east of the city will be available for the community to view at an exhibition at Eastern Leisure Centre this week.

Following the submission of a planning application to construct a new-build, 11 to16-years community-focused school on Rumney Recreation Ground, an exhibition outlining details of the proposed new building will be displayed at the leisure centre.

Interested parties will have a chance to see how the new school, which will be a replacement for Llanrumney High School and Rumney High School, could look. The exhibition will be in place until July 22.

The Welsh Government formally agreed to Cardiff Council’s plans to reorganise secondary education in the east of the city in March 2010. The proposal was developed to deal with the issue of surplus places in schools, which are a waste of valuable resources, and to address the problem of ageing school buildings.

The plans are for a state-of-the-art new school at a centrally-located site for the communities it will serve which will develop as a significant community-focused institution, in partnership with Coleg Glan Hafren and other providers, seeking to offer a range of services to the wider community. The design is for a school building fit for the 21st Century, with the diverse needs of the modern day curriculum in mind and providing access to the latest technology and modern facilities. The plans provide the potential for the development of the new school and its premises to support the creation of new learning pathways, in partnership with other schools and the nearby Coleg Glan Hafren, in order to provide a comprehensive range for academic and vocational opportunities for 14-19-year-olds as part of the Transforming Education agenda The school plans also include new youth centre facilities.

Posters detailing the plans will also be displayed at Llanrumney High School and Rumney High School as well as Llanrumney Library, Rumney Library, St Mellons Library, St Mellons Enterprise Centre and local primary schools.

Copies of the full planning submission will be available to view at Eastern Leisure Centre reception, Llanrumney Library, St Mellons Library and the Planning Reception at City Hall.

A consultation exhibition on proposed plans for the refurbishment of Eastern Leisure Centre will also take place in the east of the city during July.
