New drama centre for the Welsh capital welcomed

Plans to bring a new TV production centre to Cardiff Bay have been welcomed by Plaid Cymru Assembly Member Leanne Wood.

Work on the BBC drama centre at Roath Basin could begin within the next six months subject to planning permission.  Programmes such as Dr Who and Casualty are expected to be filmed there once it has been completed.

Earlier today Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones hailed the drama centre, saying it will “play a vital role in terms of creating sustainable jobs.”

South Wales Central AM Leanne Wood said: “This is fantastic news for Cardiff and the wider South Wales area.  Over the past few years, we have built up a strong reputation for producing quality programmes here in Wales and this will only enhance our status as an area of excellence.

“There are many people who are employed in the creative industries in Wales so this announcement will secure existing jobs and create a substantial amount of new employment.

“I would now like to see the job opportunities reaching out beyond the Cardiff area and benefitting the South Wales valleys because there is a lot of untapped young talent to be found there.”

Councillor Neil McEvoy, who is Plaid leader on Cardiff Council, said: “I’m really pleased that this is going ahead.  I’m looking forward to Cardiff becoming even more of a media hub than it is at present. It’s great news for the creative industries in the South Wales area.”
