An exhibition inspired by revolutionary computer scientist Alan Turing is exploring how art and technology are connected closer than ever before in modern-day life.
Carbon meets Silicon, which opened at Glyndŵr University on Monday September 7, features work by researchers and developers from internet computing, engineering and art and design.
The exhibition is part of the 6th International Conference on Technologies and Internet Applications hosted by the Wrexham institution.
A range of working practices including video installation, film, printmaking, painting, jewellery and sound installation are featured in the exhibition.
Curator Dr Susan Liggett, reader in art and design at Glyndŵr University, said: “The inspiration for the title of the exhibition comes from the work of Alan Turing and his exploration of artificial intelligence versus cognitive psychology.
“Carbon in the title relates to the physical materials that artists use to create their work. Silicon is designed to reflect the components which are used in many technology items, for example computers and mobile phones.
“The exhibition showcases the changing landscape in art practice over the last 50 years which has seen art merge with science and technology.”
The work of the following artists is featured in Carbon meets Silicon: Cerys Alonso, Andrew Bracey, Steve Carrick, William Card, Simon Hall, Lesley Halliwell, Rory Hickford, Paul Jones, Coryn Smethurst, Andrew Lowe-Smith, Ian McArthur, Guy Mayman, Annie Morrad, Susan Liggett, John McClenaghen, Estelle Thompson, Jill Townsely, Tracy Piper-Wright and Jonathan Weinel.
Many of the artists were in attendance at a Private View launch on Monday September 9. The exhibition runs until Friday September 11.
The biennial ITA conference has been held in Wrexham since 2005 and will this year attract up to 100 delegates from more than 30 countries.
The gathering, which features a range of keynote speakers, workshops, tutorials and fringe events, brings together researchers from academia and industry developers from digital media, engineering and computing.
