New exhibition opens at Bersham Heritage Centre

Bersham Heritage Centre marks its re-opening for the 2012 season with a new exhibition called Made in Wrexham. The exhibition celebrates the county borough’s great manufacturing heritage.

The exhibition tells the story of Wrexham’s top companies through a collection of iconic artefacts that symbolise the importance of manufacturing to the history of Wrexham, and the importance of Wrexham in the history of British manufacturing.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

  • The eleven foot tall tiled porch produced by J. C. Edward’s tileworks at Trefynant, Acrefair in about 1890;
  • A Powell 3HP stationary engine, designed and built in Wrexham in 1919
  • The old sign from outside the Wrexham Lager Brewery on Central Road, Wrexham

Jonathan Gammond, the museum’s exhibition officer said:

“Industry has been central to Wrexham’s identity for centuries and it is great to see this heritage on display at Bersham Heritage Centre. I am particularly pleased to see that there are activities for children in the exhibition and an associated programme of events for them during the school holidays.

“As part of the exhibition, Wrexham Heritage Service will be hosting a number of reunions for people who worked for different manufacturers locally and we will be organising a series of film days when archive footage of local industries will be shown. Keep an eye out for news of these events.”

Bersham will also be hosting a ‘Design a Tile with Style’ workshop on Wednesday and Thursday this week.

The free event invites people to design their own tiles based on the works of J. C. Edward.
