New gritters make Flintshire’s roads safer

Flintshire County Council has just received three new vehicles to replace and upgrade the existing fleet of Winter Maintenance Gritters.

The winter maintenance service usually operates between October and April. During this period the Council aims to keep the roads clear and make sure traffic moves safely on the main highway network to keep delays and accidents resulting from adverse weather conditions to a minimum.

One of these vehicles is the first of the “new generation” Mercedes Actros vehicles to be introduced into the United Kingdom. It is fitted with an Econ gritter body and the new Euro Five engine, which complies with the very latest 2009 European emission standards.

Councillor Tony Sharps, Flintshire County Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “Flintshire is a leading authority in its use of the latest technology and complying with new legislation. Winter maintenance is a very important service and these new vehicles will ensure that the roads within the County continue to be kept in as safe a condition as possible to enable residents and highway users to carry on with their daily lives without disruption, whether transporting the children to school, going to work or doing the weekly shop.”
