A new inspection regime for schools has been revealed by the Welsh Government.

The changes that come into force in September are aimed at:

  • limiting the ability of schools and educational institutions to predict when their next inspection will take place,
  • reducing the amount of notice given by education watchdog Estyn to schools about forthcoming inspections
  • reducing the time for post inspection action plans to 20 days.

Mid and West AM Simon Thomas, Shadow Education and Skills Minister for Plaid Cymru said:

“Last month Plaid Cymru called for spot-checks on schools by education watchdog Estyn so they could see the real situation in the classroom, without giving months’ notice. This is a first step by the Welsh Government in the right direction.

“A  Party of Wales Welsh Government would give far more freedom to schools and teachers if they had reached learning standards.

“Excellent teaching is the most important factor in ensuring children in Wales receives a world class education, that is why Plaid Cymru wants to cut red tape for teachers, head teachers and educational professionals.”
