A Vale of Glamorgan Council-owned building in Cadoxton is set to take on a new lease of life as a multi-agency support centre for the community.
An 18th Century building that has been badly damaged by fire, Cadoxton House has been derelict for a number of years.
The Safer Vale Partnership has been awarded £1.2 million from the Welsh Assembly Government for the project which will restore the house to its former glory and provide much-needed services in the area.
A range of local statutory, voluntary and charitable organisations, including Atal y Fro (formerly Vale of Glamorgan Women’s Aid), Pen yr Enfys (alcohol addiction rehabilitation), Hafan Cymru (preventing abuse and promoting independence for women, men and children escaping domestic violence) and the Police Domestic Abuse Unit, will be located at Cadoxton House.
Safer Vale Partnership chairman and cabinet member for housing and community safety Cllr Paul Church commented: “Alcohol abuse and domestic abuse are two areas of crime causing a great deal of damage, both emotionally and financially. The centre will be at the heart of the community and be a base for professionals to work together and tackle a wide range of issues affecting people from across the community.”
In the last year in the Vale, 48 per cent of domestic abuse incidents involved alcohol, and 75 and 73 per cent of priority and prolific offenders were involved in domestic abuse and have substance misuse problems respectively. Cllr Church added: “This development would help offer a seamless response to victims’ needs and would be a central point for agencies and professionals in the area providing a much more joined up approach to tackling these two problem areas.”
