New lease of life for Trealaw

Trealaw residents have been given a new lease of life – as Mayor Cllr Simon Lloyd found out when he visited a very special Healthy Living event in the village!

A Health and Wellbeing event was held in All Saints Church to showcase to residents of all ages the activities and opportunities on offer to help them live life to the full.

Organised by Trealaw Communities First and supported by many partners, the event was also a celebration of the 3rd birthday of the village’s Food Co-Op, which offers fruit, vegetables and salad at affordable prices.

Over 100 people visited All Saints Church to find out more about healthy living during an event that included pumpkin-carving, soup-making and more.

Coleg Morgannwg students offered taster sessions in complementary therapies such as Indian Head Massage, while the Trealaw Village Trust provided healthy refreshments.

Focus on Fitness offered one-to-one sessions with residents to offer them a tailor-made solution to their issues, while Stop Smoking Wales and the NHS Dental Unit offered vital information and advice.

As well as giving residents an insight into just how much is on offer to help them live healthily and independently, the day was also a celebration of the Food Co-op.

Held every Thursday morning between 10am and 12pm in All Saints Church, the co-op allows residents to purchase fresh, delicious fruit, vegetable and salad bags for just £2.50each.

The scheme has been such a success that it is now running at Trealaw and Alaw Primary Schools every Thursday, where parents can collect a bag or two of green goodies while they also pick up the kids.

Children from each of the schools have been helping Communities First with the management of the Food Co-op, learning essential business, maths and community skills along the way.

Those children who are giving their time to the Food Co-Op are earning back Timebank credits, which allow them to enjoy activities – such as entry to the youth centre and even ice-skating at the Winter Wonderland – for free.

Mayor Cllr Simon Lloyd said: “It was a pleasure to be invited to an event that saw so many different agencies and individuals come together and support their community.

“People of all ages were at the event and I hope each of them left with the information, confidence and support they need to lead a healthy lifestyle.

“I was also really impressed to hear about the hard work and achievement of the children in Alaw and Trealaw Primary Schools, who have helped to make the Food Co-Op such a success.”
