New Litter Signs on Anglesey

A new style litter sign has been put up recently at a lay-by in Llanerchymedd, Anglesey.  The sign has been designed by the Isle of Anglesey County Council and its partners to encourage people to take their litter home and to serve as a reminder that Fixed Penalty Notices of £75 will be served on anyone dropping and discarding litter.

“We are politely reminding people that it is an offence to dispose of litter inappropriately, regardless of whether or not they are inside a vehicle at the time,” said Mike Rhodes, Waste Monitoring and Enforcement Officer at the Isle of Anglesey County Council.

A local resident has been diligently picking up litter from the lay-by, located on the B5111 near Capel Peniel Cemetery.  “We have been lucky that a local resident has been tidying up the lay-by.  I brought this matter to the Llanerchymedd Community Council and we asked the County Council to assist us with this matter.  This lay-by is used by lorries, vans and cars for quick rest stops and for people, local and visitors alike, to enjoy the scenic views towards the mountain range.” said Cllr Dafydd M Parry.

“The new sign has been put at this location to remind people that they have a responsibility for their own litter. It is unacceptable to have cans, bottles, cigarette ends, fast food packaging, sweet wrappers and crisp packets littering our lay-bys, especially when most of it could be recycled back at home.  Some litter may have blown here, but most of it will have been thrown out of the windows of vehicles stopping at the lay-by,” added Mike Rhodes.

Agreeing, Cllr Parry said “I hope this new sign reminds motorists to take their litter home.”
