Police officers in Canton have been given the key to work even closer with the local community.

With support from Cardiff Council, officers now have access to Canton Library to use as their base.

It will mean the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be able to spend even more time on the beat to deal with issues affecting the community.

Local Policing Acting Sergeant Gerallt Hughes said: “It is great to be back in the heart of Canton community.”

When Canton Police Station was sold last year a new modern and cost-efficient base at Canton Library was agreed with the local authority.

While the library was being refurbished, officers were temporarily based at the police room at the Cardiff City Stadium and after 12 months away, the team has now moved into its new accommodation at the rear of the library.

Sergeant Hughes said: “We are very grateful to the local authority for allowing us the use of their facility. Officers have previously been based at the Cardiff City Stadium and we would like to thank them for hosting us.

“We are fortunate to have excellent relationships with both the council and Cardiff City which allow us all to work together to keep the community safe.

“Canton has dedicated police constables and community support officers who are out and about on patrol providing a visible presence in the community and working with the community to tackle local concerns.”

Cabinet Member for Community Development, Co-Operatives and Social Enterprise, Cllr Peter Bradbury, said: “A warm welcome to the neighbourhood policing team in their new home in Canton Library.  The Council has placed a strong emphasis on using our  community buildings in an innovative way and working with our partners to improve services for people in their local areas.

“This arrangement is the perfect example of how we can come together, share resources and deliver services to people in an accessible and sustainable way.”
