New rugby teams for Vale girls

Teams at both under 12s and under 15s age levels have been set up by Barry RFC after the club received funding from the Sports Council for Wales. The teams are training on Sunday mornings and will play friendly games throughout the season against other girls from across South Wales.

Thanks to the funding, it is the first time in the Vale that girls’ rugby has been backed by the necessary support to hopefully help the club grow and prosper for many years to come.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s rugby development officer Matt Silva, who has helped Barry RFC members set up the new team, said: A women’s team started up in Cowbridge a couple of years ago and we hope that these new junior girls teams at Barry RFC will also be a tremendous success. Funding will help us train new coaches and buy the equipment we need, and we’ll be looking to recruit girls from all of the Vale’s secondary schools who would like to play rugby. Although the teams are for under 12s and under 15s initially, girls who are a year or so younger are also welcome to come along.

All interested girls are invited to train with the club at Barry RFC every Sunday from 10:15am to 11:45am, and to find out more please call Nikki Thomas on 07723 600964. A group of around 20 ladies have also started training with plans afoot to set up a team, and more players are welcome to join!
