New Season on Flat Holm Island

Spring has sprung on Flat Holm Island and a full programme of activities and events are planned for the new season ahead.

A day trip to Flat Holm provides three hours on the Island and offers a unique opportunity to see Flat Holm’s conservation, wildlife and historic buildings. There is also time to relax and enjoy the Island’s atmosphere with a cup of tea or coffee and visit the souvenir shop.

2011 will also see new facilities opening on the Island including the Flat Holm Farm shop, which will offer Flat Holm grown vegetables when in season and the Island’s very own eggs.

A new pub, set in the Victorian Barracks will also be open on the Island this summer, offering a selection of local beers, ales and wines. This will be available to all day trippers and overnight visitors.

Flat Holm, once a sanctuary for monks, Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, silver miners and smugglers, is now a mix of ruins from bygone eras and modern sustainable living. On the Island you will find wind turbines, solar panels, WWII gun embattlements and an isolation hospital from the 1800s. It’s perhaps most famous for receiving the first ever radio message across water by Marconi in 1897, and has even featured in the BBC TV series Torchwood.
