New Shotton School Opens in September

DSC_1936As they look forward to moving into a brand new school in September, children are documenting the history of their two Shotton schools for future generations by placing artefacts and mementoes in a time capsule.

The time capsule will be buried on the site of the new £6.4m Ysgol Ty Ffynnon primary school, which will replace Taliesin Junior School and Shotton Infants School.

The new single storey building will accommodate 270 primary and 30 nursery pupils and has been designed to Welsh Government 21 century school standards by Flintshire County Council’s Property and Design Consultancy staff.

It has nine classrooms and two resource classes for children with moderate learning difficulties, a nursery, assembly hall, studio, kitchen and community facilities. Outside there are landscaped play and recreation areas.

The school is funded jointly by Flintshire County Council and the Welsh Government and is being built by Read Construction Holdings Ltd of Brymbo.

Headteacher Helen Hughes said:

“We will soon be moving to our new school but wanted to ensure that memories of the two schools are not forgotten. Read Construction has worked closely with the children of both schools and has involved us from the very early stages. Inside the time capsule, items will include journals written by the children which document their memories of the old school, copies of the old school logos, copies of a recent thanksgiving service and concert programme and children’s photographs and drawings.”

Councillor Chris Bithell, Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said:

“The new school has been built to a high standard, to provide modern, first class facilities and the best learning opportunities for our children. We wish the staff and pupils the very best in their new environment.”

Commercial Manager John Prichard-Taylor from Read Construction Holdings Ltd, said:

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with the staff and the pupils of Taliesin Junior and Shotton Infants schools. We are proud of our involvement in delivering award winning 21st century school facilities to support first class education.”
