New waste collection times in Arfon

During January 2010, changes will be introduced to the waste and recycling collection service in Arfon. To ensure the changes are introduced as smoothly as possible, the Council’s Waste and Recycling Service are already trying to raise awareness of the changes, and Arfon residents can expect an information leaflet through the post during the next week explaining the new collection.

Once the changes are introduced in Arfon, household waste (green wheeled bin or up to 3 black bags) will be collected one week and the food and garden waste (brown bin) will be collected the following week.

The blue box collection will become a weekly service, to be used for recycling paper, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, cans and tins, aerosols, household batteries and clean foil.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, who leads on Environment issues on Gwynedd Council explains that the new arrangements will be a huge step forward towards recycling and composting more than ever:

“The new collection arrangements in the Arfon area is an important step towards reducing the amount of waste in Gwynedd going into landfill sites. Introducing this new way of collecting has been successful in the Dwyfor and Meirionnydd area. We need the support and co-operation of all of Gwynedd’s residents to do this.”

“By introducing these changes, those who haven’t had the food and garden waste will get the service for the first tme. By composting the organic waste in the brown bin we can significantly reduce the amount of waste going into the green bin and into landfill sites.”

Steffan Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Waste and Recycling Senior Manager added:

“In order to explain the new collection arrangements to Arfon residents, the Council’s Recycling Team will visit many locations throughout Arfon during the next few months to discuss the changes face to face. The Team will be more than ready to answer any questions about the changes and waste and recycling collections. The Team will also be preparing a full information pack that will be sent out to Arfon residents in early January.”

Details about the Recycling Team’s information roadshows will be announced over the coming weeks.
