Newport police officiers help elderly in snow

Neighbourhood police officers across Newport showed their community spirit during the snowy conditions last week.

Officers from Newport East Neighbourhood Policing Team delighted elderly residents in Westmoor Road and Abbeyfield House nursing home, both in Lliswerry, by digging out their footpaths and the pavements outside there houses.
Those who would have been kept indoors due to the weather conditions were able to leave their houses as a result.

One elderly resident of Westmoor Road said: “I would like to thank the kind officers for doing this.

“They already do enough around here without having to do this – it is very much appreciated.”

Sergeant Brendon Fisher, who shovelled snow alongside PCs and PCSOs, said: “It is our duty is to make people feel safe in their communities and this was part of our service to the public.

“We were aware that many elderly people were stuck inside after the two bouts of heavy snowfall we have had in the last week, so we decided to clear some footpaths during our regular patrols of the area.”
