Newport thief targets visiting wheelchair user

Police in Newport are appealing for information about a robbery that occurred in a car park on Bridge Street Newport last night, Wednesday, March 10, 2010 between 10.30pm and 11pm.

The victim, who is a 41 year old wheelchair user, was proceeding along Commercial Street into Bridge Street when he was approached by a man who offered to help him. Despite the victim saying he didn’t need help, the man was wheeled into a car park on Bridge Street.

When they arrived the man grabbed a bag from the victim. The bag, which is a black cloth bag with a long strap and four zipped compartments, contained a small amount of cash, bank cards and personal items. The victim, who originates from West Wales but was staying in Newport at the time of the incident, was not injured.  The offender ran off across the car park down the side of Acorn Recruitment.

The victim then called to two men who were walking up Bridge Street for help and they ran after the offender but were unable to catch up with him. The two men returned to the victim to ask about his welfare but left before police arrived.

The offender is described as a white male, about five feet seven inches, slim, aged in his mid 20s and was wearing a green jacket with a hood.
