No child is born to die

Darren Millar Assembly Member for Clwyd West has pledged his support for Save the Children’s No Child Born To Die campaign to stop the deaths of 8 million children from preventable causes every year.

In the world’s poorest countries, children are dying at a rate too awful to think about. Pneumonia and diarrhoea are the biggest killers of under-fives globally accounting for three times more deaths than malaria and HIV.

The No Child Born To Die campaign also believes that no child should be born without a chance. All children have the right to a warm home, the right food and the hope of a good education. That is why Save the Children is helping the poorest children and families in Wales to get a better start in life by campaigning to end child poverty by 2020.

Save the Children recently held a summertime celebration at the Senedd inviting Assembly Members along to talk to the charity about its work in Wales. As part of the event, and in support of the No Child Born To Die campaign, Assembly Members were asked to share what they were ‘born to do’.

Darren Millar AM said that he was “Born To Campaign.”

Darren Millar added: “I’m delighted to pledge my support for this worthy campaign.

“Every child deserves a chance to fulfil his or her potential in life, and I’d encourage anyone with an interest in giving them that chance to join Save the Children’s campaign.”

Bill Gray from Save the Children in Wales said: “We are calling on the public, politicians, the private sector, on everyone to help us stop this shocking waste of young life. We need funds to help deliver more vaccines to children and to train more health workers in the world’s poorest economies.

“It is also vitally important to invest in eradicating child poverty. Growing up in poverty is a denial of children’s rights and can have a damaging and lasting impact on children. Our vision is for a Wales where no child is born without a chance. Together we can help them shine and fulfil their potential.”
