Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns team have installed new bins across the county as part of the ongoing campaign to make our towns and villages clean and pleasant places to live by combating litter.
The distinctive green and gold Tidy Towns bins are located in busy central areas, replacing some of the older bins. In coastal areas, the bins are fitted with special flaps which can prevent mess caused by scavenging seagulls. All bins include ashtrays to help reduce the unsightly problem of cigarette stumps and chewing gum on our streets.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Environment Portfolio Leader, welcomed the new bins. He said: “There is no excuse for anyone to drop litter in the street with the introduction of these new bins, especially as they can be used to safely and conveniently dispose of cigarette stumps and chewing gum.
“By everyone doing their bit we can take on this problem. The bins are there to be used responsibly.
“Anyone who drops litter on the street are risking an on the spot fine of £75 from one of the Council’s Street Enforcement Team.”
Peter Simpson, Gwynedd Council’s Streetscene Manager added: “Thanks to the funding received as part of the Welsh Government’s Tidy Towns Initiative we have been able to locate the latest batch of new on-street litter bins at Llanberis, Bethesda, Bangor, Caernarfon, Penrhyndeudraeth, Barmouth, Harlech, Tywyn, Nefyn and Criccieth.
“I hope these smart new bins will encourage people to do the right thing and dispose of their rubbish in a responsible manner.
“I would also encourage people to recycle waste that they would normally throw in the litter bin, such as newspapers, drink bottles and cans.”
On-street litter bins are intended for small single items of waste and should not be used for disposing of larger quantities of household or commercial waste. The Street Enforcement Team will also be taking steps to stop those who leave their waste in bags beside street litter bins.
