Noise pollurion competition winners announced

Congratulations to students Jon Brooks and Althea Sutton who are the joint winners of Cardiff Council’s Noise Competition which was launched during Noise Action Week 2009 to promote considerate neighbour behaviour.

Competition entrants were asked to create a short film, of no longer than 40 seconds, to raise awareness of Cardiff Council’s out of hours noise service and to highlight the impacts of noise with Cardiff’s student population.

In 2009 the Noise Service in Cardiff dealt with over 2,150 complaints about amplified noise. Figures show that Cathays and Plasnewydd, suburbs with a high proportion of students, are in the top four areas most affected by noise in the city.

The two winning films will be used to promote noise awareness in Cardiff and provide an excellent opportunity to showcase the talent of their creators. They can be viewed from the noise pollution page on www.cardiff.gov.uk

The competition was organised by Cardiff’s Noise Pollution and Health Improvement teams and sponsored by Keylet, specialists in student and professional  accommodation lettings in Cardiff. The winners were both awarded with a cheque for £250 by Councillor Ed Bridges, Chair of Cardiff’s Public Protection Committee.

Councillor Ed Bridges said: “During Noise Action Week 2009 we encouraged students to consider the noise that affects them and the noise that they make. The winning films portray in an imaginative way the message that noise is a quality of life issue that affects everyone and many noise complaints could be avoided with a little consideration for our neighbours.”

Emma Nugent, Managing Director of Keylet said: “We were keen to be involved with the project and to support Cardiff Council’s work towards considerate behaviour in respect of noise pollution in the student areas of the city.  We appreciate, as do our tenants, the duty to the community to be socially responsible when undertaking a tenancy to ensure a mutual harmony between neighbours.

“Our support and involvement with the council also adds value to our service for landlords, as responsible tenants will better maintain properties and further encourage a tenancy free of any issue or complaint.  The DVD is a creative, informative and worthwhile vehicle to communicate the importance of noise awareness and we will continue to support Cardiff Council in its community projects.”
