Nominate your Sports Coach for Prestigious Award

The sporting community of Neath Port Talbot are being called upon to nominate their sports coaches for a prestigious annual award.

The public can now nominate coaches for The Sport Wales Coach of the Year Awards 2010.

Ali Thomas, Leader of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is hoping for a big number of nominations for the annual Sport Wales awards;

Neath Port Talbot recognises the massive contribution made by people who give up their time to support sport by coaching and volunteering.

Neath Port Talbot would not be a success without the dedicated individuals who make such a valuable contribution to their communities.

“We hope as many local clubs, players, athletes, friends, groups and organisations as possible nominate their own local superstars.”

And there are a number of categories you could put your coach up for. They are:

  • Female Coach
  • Male Coach
  • Community Coach
  • Coach to disabled sportspeople
  • Young Coach/Leader (aged 25 and under)
  • Elite Performance Coach
  • Volunteer of the year
  • Coach Educator of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement

The deadline for nominations is Friday 1st October 2010 (with the exception of Elite Performance Coach which will be Friday 15th October).

The prestigious Sport Wales Coach of the Year accolade will be awarded to one of the category winners.

Previous winners include rugby coach Graham Henry, swim guru Dave Haller and cycling’s Shane Sutton.

It is a fitting end to the year has seen Wales champion the role of coaches and volunteers – and encourage more of the public to sign up – through the Behind Every Star campaign.

Chair of Sport Wales, Professor Laura McAllister explains:

“Coaches are the lifeblood of Welsh sport, we can’t do without them. The calibre of coaches I come across on a regular basis is absolutely outstanding.

“We know there are more coaches than ever before, so we want to see more entries than ever before.

“This is the public’s chance to show their appreciation for the people who put in hours and hours of work across the country.”

The winners will be announced in a ceremony at the Sport Wales National Centre, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on 24 November 2009.
