A multi agency week long clean up along the North Wales Coastline has proven a great success. In total 9 clean ups were arranged during the week, in locations such as Talacre, Prestatyn, Gronant, Rhyl, Llandudno, Deganwy, Llanfairfechan, Brynsiencyn and Bangor.
Approximately 315 volunteers took part in the events which were jointly organised by Flintshire County Council, Denbighshire County Council, Conwy County Borough Council, Gwynedd Council, Isle of Anglesey County Council and Keep Wales Tidy.
The aim of the week long clean up was to remove litter and rubbish from the shores of North Wales. The week proved useful in raising awareness about many different issues including the dangers that washed up waste poses both to wildlife and humans. Issues such as the correct means of waste disposal and recycling were also highlighted.
Lesley Jones Chief Executive Keep Wales Tidy said;
“The week long campaign has been a great success with over 300 volunteers helping to remove 364 bags of rubbish from the shores of North Wales. A variety of waste was removed during the week which included items such as disposable barbeques, fishing tackle, plastic bottles and tyres. We wish to thank all the volunteers who took part in the event, with out their help the clean up wouldn’t have taken place.”
Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing Jane Davidson added:
“To celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity on 22 May I announced five top tips for protecting Wales’ biodiversity, which included volunteering for a local conservation group.
“The success of The Big Spring Clean illustrates just what volunteers can achieve when they work together to improve their surroundings. I would like to thank and congratulate all the groups and individuals who took part and encourage everyone, regardless of where they live, to do what they can to protect Wales’ environment for future generations.”
