Three Swansea off-licences were caught selling alcohol to under 18s during the latest Test Purchase Operation run by the Safer Swansea Partnership.
Swansea Council’s Trading Standards Department and Police Officers took underage volunteers to nine stores throughout the city and county to carry out the tests on January 29.
The stores were visited as a result of intelligence gained from the public about stores that were suspected of selling alcohol illegally.
The three that sold alcohol to the volunteers either received fixed penalty notices or will be subject to further enforcement action.
Sergeant Dean Evans of South Wales Police said: “Eight off-licences have sold alcohol to under 18s in the last two operations. This is very disappointing as previous to this we felt the message had got through to licence holders. We will work closely with trading standards to ascertain if these premises are fit to hold a licence.
“This demonstrates the need for Safer Swansea to sustain regular tests on off-licences to ensure they are upholding the law.
“Those caught breaking the law must face the consequences.”
The operations are carried out on a regular basis as a way of reducing the opportunity for underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.
Swansea Council Trading Standards Officer Claire Parry said: “It causes us concern that these sales have occurred and we will take further action against traders who persistently sell to underage children.”
