North Wales’ flagship leisure centre is officially opening its state of the art health and fitness facilities on Monday 28 November.
Looking to get into shape for Christmas, fit into your favourite party dress or simply enjoy some free time with friends and family? Flintshire County Council’s Deeside Leisure Centre now boasts an 80-station fitness suite, two fitness studios, a toning studio and brand new changing rooms.
With the aim of attracting local residents of all ages, shapes and fitness abilities, Flintshire County Council teamed with development partner, Alliance Leisure, to invest £10 million into its leisure provision across the county.
The redevelopment project, consisting of a three phase approach, began with six 5-a-side floodlit football pitches, catering for both adult and junior football. Since opening in November 2010, the pitches have attracted 50,000 visits so far. The second phase has seen the overhaul of the health and fitness suite.
The final phase of the scheme will see the January 2012 opening of the first Welsh public day spa. It will accommodate four treatment rooms and a number of heat experiences. This will include a herb sauna, a crystal steam room, a salt grotto, an aroma room, foot spas, an igloo, feature showers, a spa pool, heated loungers and a relaxation area.
An indoor extreme sporting arena is also due to open in early 2012, including a large skate park and a range of thrilling ramps and jumps for BMX riders, skateboarders, in-line skaters and scooters.
The centre is also set to become a major draw for climbing fanatics with 80 square metres of climbing surface reaching a maximum height of four metres for bouldering. The wall will cater for all abilities, from easy routes to the more technical and difficult overhang routes; plus a seven metre high climbing tower to introduce new climbers to the sport. There will also be a five metre high ropes course.
The Health and Fitness Suite will be officially opened on Monday 28 November by the Vice Chair of Flintshire County Council, Councillor Fred Gillmore, and Councillor Dennis Hutchinson, Executive Member for Leisure and Public Protection at Flintshire County Council, who said:
“Our aim is to encourage more people to take part in regular sport and physical activity to ensure wide ranging health and social benefits throughout Flintshire. These new facilities have already proved to be a great success with people, and are welcoming, inspiring and a pleasure to visit.”
