A Celebration Event took place recently at Clwyd Theatr Cymru to mark International Day for Older People and to launch Phase Three of the Older People’s Strategy.

The event was attended by over 100 older people from across the county.

It was opened by Councillor Christine Jones, Older People’s Champion and Cabinet Member for Social Services; Neil Ayling, Director of Community Services, and Daisy Cole, Director of Well-being and Empowerment from the Older People’s Commissioner in Wales Office.

Older people took part in interactive workshops led by Communities 2.0, Age Concern North East Wales, and Jan Gardner, a local artist who has worked with a number of our Forums this year on creative arts projects, the results of which were proudly displayed on the day.

A range of organisations were also able to talk to older people about the services that they offer and the work that they do in order to keep older people safe, provide support and information about a range of issues and to maintain their independence and well being.

The afternoon culminated in an awards presentation to older people in recognition of their significant contribution to their communities over the past 12 months.

Councillor Christine Jones, Cabinet Member for Social Services, said:

“This event was a great way to mark the UN’s International Day for Older People in Flintshire and to celebrate the contributions that older people make to their local communities. Congratulations to all of those who were nominated for an award as well as to those who were presented with an award on the evening. Thanks to everyone who organised the event and who made it such a successful day – it was excellent.”
