Open Doors Denbighshire – Llangollen

Following a hugely successful weekend in Denbigh, ‘Open Doors’ will be coming to Llangollen on 18 and 19 September.

Walks and tours still available to book include: a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Royal International Pavilion which is home to the International Musical Eisteddfod.

Scale the heights to Castell Dinas Bran with Denbighshire County Council Archaeologist, Fiona Gale – good walking shoes are advisable!  Fiona leads the popular Medieval Denbigh and Ruthin tours and is well worth joining this tour in Llangollen.

You can also pre-book tours to look at St Collen’s Church which dates from the 13th century and to visit the engineering workshop at Llangollen Steam Railway where they restore locomotives for heritage railways.

Want to go on some tours led by characters from Llangollen’s past?  Visit Valle Crucis Abbey where the custodian will be giving tours dressed as a Cistercian Monk!    Join the Living History tour and meet Thomas Telford and many other characters along the way.  ‘Lady of Llangollen’ Sarah Ponsonby will lead you on an historic town walk – this walk requires pre-booking.

Take a walk along the canal to the pump house at Horseshoe Falls where someone will be on hand to talk about its history; parking is available at Llantysilio Green.

Llangollen will have free parking in all car parks during the weekend.

Open Doors is also taking place in Ruthin on 25 and 26 September, please remember to pay parking fees as this will not be free.

For more information visit the website www.opendoorsdenbighshire.org.uk or phone 01978 860828 / 01824 705274 to request a guidebook which has full details of all events.

European Heritage Days are an initiative of the Council of Europe.  ‘Open Doors’ is co-ordinated by the Civic Trust for Wales whose partners organise parallel events in England and Scotland.  The initiative was launched in 1991 and last year over 20 million people visited all the participating sites throughout Europe.
