19 bikers were caught breaking the speed limit over the weekend as police continued their efforts to crackdown on dangerous riding with Operation Darwen.
The operation is a force-wide campaign which runs from Easter through until early autumn and is aimed at motorcycle safety and reducing casualties on the roads of North Wales.
Some of the high speeds recorded over the weekend were over a 100mph – one rider was caught on the A5104 to A494 in Mold travelling at 103mph and another travelling on the A5104 in Treuddyn at 104 mph. Go Safe also clocked a speeding biker travelling at 103mph on the A5 at Cerrigydrudion.
Another biker was caught riding at 94mph on the A5 at Cerrigydrudion.
Over recent weeks other bikers have been clocked riding at 119mph on the A494 and 125mph on the A5104 at Bryneglwys.
North Wales Police are urging all riders to be responsible in the saddle and have promised to take action against law-breakers.
Superintendent Rob Kirman said: “We have seen a recent increase in the number of bikers being injured on the roads and we will continue with Operation Darwen over the coming months with extra patrols and further engagement with riders.
“Operation Darwen is one of many campaigns and initiatives that we run throughout the year targeting high-risk road users. It is not about alienating the motorcycling community – I’m a biker myself and I love to get out and about on the roads of North Wales. Op Darwen is about education, enforcement and most importantly biker safety.”
“Whilst the vast majority of motorcyclists ride appropriately, some riders choose to use the roads as a racetrack, committing serious breaches of road safety legislation, such as speeding and riding dangerously thereby putting themselves and other road users at risk of death or life changing injury.”
“We are committed to keeping people safe on the roads of North Wales – we want them to enjoy the roads but most of all we want them to ride safely and responsibly.”
Throughout the campaign BikeSafe representatives are also out speaking to riders and promoting the BikeSafe initiative which offer *free workshops in North Wales. A number of BikeSafe engagement days have been organised for the summer months including visits to the Ponderosa, Betws-y-Coed, Corwen and Llangollen.
