Parade celebrates Freedom of Conwy County Borough

The Royal Welsh will parade through Llandudno on Saturday 18 September 2010 as they are declared Freemen of the County Borough of Conwy.

The Freedom of the County Borough of Conwy is the highest accolade that Conwy County Borough Council can bestow and The Royal Welsh have been declared as Freemen of the County Borough in recognition of the eminent services provided by the regiment.

At 12noon the Parade will start from Mostyn Broadway Coach Park through the town of Llandudno, along Mostyn Street. The Parade will then turn right into Gloddaeth Street towards the Promenade.

The Parade will stop at the War Memorial on the North Promenade for inspection by the Chairman of Conwy County Borough Council and the Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd.

The Chairman of Conwy County Borough Council, Cllr Brenda Taylor, will address the Parade and will present to the Colonel of the Regiment the parchment scroll recording the presentation of the Freedom of the County Borough of Conwy.

Cllr Brenda Taylor, Chairman of Conwy County Borough Council said, “It gives me great pleasure to grant the freedom of the County Borough to The Royal Welsh.  To recognise the role that The Royal Welsh and its predecessors have played in representing the British Armed Forces and also to consolidate the Freedoms that already exist for part of the borough.”

The Parade will then be addressed by the Lord Lieutenant of Clwyd, Mr Trevor Jones CBE and by the Colonel of the Regiment, Major General R. J. M. Porter MBE

The Parade will give a general salute at the bandstand and then return to Venue Cymru car park for stand down.

Commanding Officer 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh (Royal Welch Fusiliers), Lieutenant Colonel Nick Lock, said: “1 R WELSH is delighted and honoured to be marching through Llandudno.

“The support from the public has been fantastic following our recent tour of Afghanistan and that means so much to the regiment.

“We now look forward to furthering our ties with Conwy and to exercising our freedom with a parade this weekend.”
