Park and Share to cut traffic queues

Car_Park_Sign_150A new free Park and Share scheme is being launched in Swansea in a bid to cut congestion, emissions and car parking on residential streets.

Swansea Council is launching the free car park facility just off the M4 at junction 46 for people who wish to park their vehicles and share for the rest of their journey.

The site at Felindre will be open from Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm. It will be signposted from the M4 junction 46.

As well being free and within easy reach of the M4, the Council is hoping it will prove popular as it offers a manned security presence.

Cllr John Hague, Swansea Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We are hoping that this facility will help meet the needs of commuters and residents alike. Following the initial launch we will be inviting feedback in a bid to best develop the scheme to meet demand.”

Car sharing is a proven successful way of reducing congestion and damaging Co2 emissions that are affecting our environment.

It can offer reduced motoring costs by cutting petrol consumption and parking costs.

Swansea Council has long supported car sharing and is a partner in the SWWITCH2Share regional car share scheme for south west Wales which is used by many in and around Swansea.

That scheme, which enables people to find car sharers for their journey, has been running since 2004 and 1,000 users are now registered on the website.

Swansea Council is also hoping the Felindre site will assist residents living near the M4 who have been experiencing parking issues as car sharers leave vehicles outside their homes and businesses all day.

Flyers will be posted around the Penllergaer, Llangyfelach and Birchgrove areas initially to encourage people parking in residential streets for car sharing to move to the Felindre facility instead.
