Parrott: Plaid’s Position on Independence is “Simply Not Credible”

Eluned Parrott AM Portrait 2Ahead of a speech by former Plaid Cymru leader Dafydd Wigley, Welsh Liberal Democrat Eluned Parrott AM has questioned Plaid’s position on Europe and Welsh independence, saying that it is “simply not credible”.

Plaid Cymru’s long-standing wish for Welsh independence is a threat to Welsh membership of the European Union, and with it the thousands of Welsh jobs that depend on our trade with Europe.

The Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Europe, Eluned Parrott AM, said:

“In reality, Plaid Cymru are quite similar to UKIP.  They both put their narrow, blinkered separatist ideology first, risking the Welsh economy and jobs. Neither stand up for Wales or act in the Welsh interest because they both put our place in Europe at risk.
“Plaid’s position on independence is simply not credible. You can’t argue to keep us in Europe to work with our neighbouring countries, whilst wanting Wales to turn our backs on the rest of the UK.

“Plaid’s MEP doesn’t stand up for Wales either. In 2011 she spoke just once in the European Parliament, and her speaking record in Brussels is even worse than Wales’s UKIP MEP. For years she failed to even mention Wales in her speeches to the European Parliament.

“You can’t trump little England nationalism with Welsh nationalism. Both want to put up barriers and isolate us from the rest of the world, with no regard for the consequences. There’s only one way to protect Welsh jobs and Wales’s place in the world, and that’s by voting for Wales’s only party of IN: the Welsh Liberal Democrats.”
