Passengers given a helping hand with buses

Bus users in Swansea are getting the message loud and clear about when the new city bus station opens.

A traditional town crier has been called upon to bellow out the opening date to shoppers and visitors in the city centre to them know buses will be operational from the new development from Monday December 6.

Swansea Council has also produced a handy information leaflet which provides passengers with a complete layout of the new station. The leaflet includes full details of local and national bus services and which bay they depart from in the station.

Cllr John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment in Swansea Council, said: “The new Swansea City Bus Station will be a huge asset to the city and for public transport users when it opens.

“We are doing everything we can to ensure bus passengers get all the information they need prior to the opening.

“I’m sure everyone will feel very proud of the new bus station and what has been achieved in the city. We have shown we are totally committed to improving public transport links in the city centre.”

A new bus station manager and a team of bus rangers are already in place to welcome passengers back to the redeveloped bus terminal.

The new station will house 20 bus bays, three coach stands, a modern passenger waiting area, ticketing services and Shopmobility facilities.

It will also include one of only seven state-of-the-art Changing Places toilets for use by people with multiple or profound disabilities.

Richard Stafford, Bus Station Manager, said: “We are all really excited about the opening. Passengers have coped really well during the construction phase and we will do all we can to give everyone a really special welcome back to the new and modern bus station.

“Some aspects of the bus station such as the retail elements won’t be quite ready for the December opening but all bus services will be operating from there on December 6.”

The project has received significant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and the Wales European Funding Office.
