Petulance over Council Tax freeze refusal

Welsh Conservatives today accused the Welsh Labour Government of ‘petulance’ over the First Minister’s refusal to support pensioners and families by freezing Council Tax.

In First Minister’s Questions, Carwyn Jones (pictured) indicated that the Welsh Labour Government would not implement a Council Tax freeze.

This is the second year running that Welsh Labour Ministers have refused to implement a Council tax freeze, despite being given the money to implement it from the UK Coalition.

Council Tax has been frozen in Scotland by the SNP Government, backed by Scottish Labour.

Andrew RT Davies AM, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly, said, “Welsh Labour’s refusal to implement a Council Tax freeze, despite being given the money to do it, is a massive blow to hard-pressed families and pensioners across Wales.

“A freeze would have been a sensible move to ensure Welsh taxpayers are treated fairly with people in England and Scotland where Council Tax has been frozen.

“This is the second time that the people of Wales have lost out due to the petulance and dogmatic approach of Welsh Labour Ministers.

“The Barnett consequential from the UK Coalition is new money so a freeze would not take any money away from frontline services.

“This is a missed opportunity and a disappointment that Welsh Labour Ministers continue to put party politics before people.”
