Pilot food waste collection service

Did you know that in Wales 350,000 tonnes of edible food is thrown away each year? When placed in land fill, food waste creates methane gas which is very harmful to the environment.

To help tackle this problem Flintshire County Council will be introducing a pilot kerbside food waste collection service to around 20,000 properties in selected areas across the county. The areas included in the pilot scheme have been selected to reflect the diverse range of property types in Flintshire. The food waste collected will be composted at a purpose built facility using an enclosed system.

The scheme will start in April and will be a weekly collection on the same day as the black sack. During March properties included in the scheme will have two caddies and a roll of biodegradable bags delivered to their homes. The smaller caddy and compostable sack is for storing food waste scraps from the kitchen. The waste can then be transferred into the larger caddy, with a lockable lid, for residents to place at the kerbside outside their home for collection. Prior to the scheme beginning, an analysis of the black sack waste in the pilot areas will be carried out, with a further one planned at the end of the pilot scheme to measure its success in diverting food waste.

The scheme will be run for a period of six months and if successful will be introduced to the remaining domestic properties in Flintshire.

Flintshire County Council’s executive member for Waste Strategy, Councillor Nancy Matthews said: “The collection of food waste is an integral part of our waste strategy and I would encourage everyone in the pilot scheme to take part”.
