Plaid Cymru Comments on Unemployment Figures

Rhun ap IorwerthResponding to today’s unemployment figures, the Party of Wales Shadow Economy Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said:

“It’s good to see that unemployment has fallen once again over the past three months. This is good news that indicates that more and more people are finding their way back to the workplace.

“However, when we look past the headline figure, it is clear that thousands of people in all part of Wales are still struggling economically.

“The number of those working part-time because they couldn’t find a full-time job is up 3,000 to 69,000 over the year, economic inactivity has risen by 25,000 over the year, and despite the Welsh Government’s use of experimental figures, the ONS official statistics show that youth unemployment rate is 21.3%, higher than the other UK nation and significantly higher than the UK average. On top of this, underemployment continues to soar.

“We must ensure that any economic recovery is felt by all.”
