Councillor Lindsay Whittle, Plaid Cymru leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council has accused opposition councillors of misleading campaigners who opposed the closure of a care home in Risca.
Lindsay Whittle was speaking after winning a motion of no confidence tabled by Independent councillor David Rees by 34-29.
Lindsay Whittle said: “I’m pleased to have won the motion of no confidence but unfortunately many Labour councillors played politics with the issue of the closure of Ty Darren in Risca.
“They spoke out strongly against the executive decision but eight Labour councillors, as well as two Independents, were absent from the vote. Two Labour councillors David Carter and Keith Reynolds even left the meeting before the vote.
“If the Labour Party felt so strongly about this issue they would have ensured all their councillors turned up. They didn’t, which really says it all. It was a cheap stunt and they have misled the public of Risca, for which they should be ashamed.
“Some Labour councillors even told me afterwards that there was no way they wanted the vote to go their way.”
