Plaid welcome Labour’s ‘late’ arrival to S4C campaign

Commenting on news this morning that Labour in Wales are finally starting to consider the impact of the proposed Westminster Government’s cuts to S4C’s budget, Plaid Cymru MP for Arfon Hywel Williams has urged Labour to now get fully behind the campaign to save S4C from the most severe cuts proposed said:

“We welcome the fact that some in Labour have come to understand the very real threats that we in Plaid have been campaigning against for months now.

“As far back as May this year Plaid said that any cuts in S4C would be unlawful because an Act of Parliament determines the channel’s funding. Since then we have been campaigning along side others to protect this vital service.

“It’s a shame that many Labour MPs have been so slow to react to this. Of course, today’s announcement isn’t news to Plaid and the many other campaigners who first raised this exact issue almost four months ago.

“What is needed is not a repeat of statement detailing the obvious, but a concerted political campaign.

“Although belated, we now hope that Labour politicians will join with us and the many other organisations and campaign to protect S4Cs from the most savage Westminster cuts.”
