A report is being considered by the City Council’s Cabinet on Thursday which recommends that a public consultation is held on proposals to address the shortage of English-medium primary school places across those areas.

Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, Cllr Julia Magill said: “Addressing the shortfall in English-medium primary education across Cyncoed, Penylan and parts of Plasnewydd is of great importance. A priority for the City Council is making sure we provide the best possible opportunity for the children and young people of Cardiff to access high quality education.

“I want to use this consultation as an opportunity to put together plans in partnership with the communities of Cyncoed, Penylan and parts of Plasnewydd. By working together we can make sure education continues to make the difference to give our children the skills and knowledge that will help them to succeed in the future and take advantage of the opportunities Cardiff has to offer.”

Projections based on NHS data from 2013 indicate that the number of English-medium community pupils entering Reception will continue to increase in future years until at least September 2016, the latest year for which data are available. The Cabinet report recommends that in the short-term temporary arrangements are put in place to establish two form entry nursery and Reception provision on the Howardian site from September 2015.

Further consultation will take place either later this year or early next year on a catchment area for September 2016 for a proposed new two form entry English medium primary school on the Howardian site, with the first phase of building work also being planned for that date.
