Pledge A Pound For Ponty’s Heroes

A special fundraising day will take place in Pontypridd town centre to help swell the donations to erect a Roll of Honour and remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

On Saturday May 14th 2011 RAF Cadets will be ‘shaking the buckets’ in Taff Street and Penuel Square, collecting donations from visitors to the town.

Pontypridd radio station GTFM is also throwing its weight behind the initiative by hosting an outside broadcast in the shopping thoroughfare.

The final Roll of Honour will adorn a new monument in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, commemorating the names of all those from Pontypridd who lost their lives serving in the two world wars and subsequent conflicts.

The list comprises nearly 1,300 names of people from Pontypridd, as defined by the former Urban District and Town Council boundaries, who lost their lives serving their country and fighting for freedom.

Councillor Simon Lloyd, Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, said: “We are honoured as a local authority to answer the calls of the general public who have requested that a fitting Roll of Honour be established in Pontypridd to remember all those who came from the area and fell in conflicts throughout the world.

“Although no tribute or praise can truly match the magnitude of the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes, the Roll of Honour will mark a fitting Memorial where families and future generations can view each of the many hundreds of names and remember with pride how they allowed us to live a life of freedom and democracy.

“I would encourage the people of Pontypridd to consider how they can support the project, which will honour those who gave so much for our sake and I’m sure plenty of individuals will make donations on our special fundraising day in the town centre.”

Ynysangharad Park has served as a memorial to the war dead of Pontypridd since it was opened following public support and subscription in 1923. However, neither of the two commemorative monuments that are already in the Park display the names of the fallen and there is no Roll of Honour for Pontypridd. It is felt that with the full support of the community, it would be fitting to establish a memorial with the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Roll of Honour is available  to view at www.rctcbc.gov.uk/pwmappeal and the public are asked to let the Council know of any amendments that may be necessary.
