Police Appeal: Doorstep Crime At A Home In Cardiff

South Wales Police is investigating a doorstep crime that occurred at an elderly man’s house on the morning of Saturday 16 January 2010.

The 79-year-old male victim who lives alone on Bampton Road, Llanrumney, Cardiff agreed to have his gutters cleaned after a man had knocked on his door on the morning of Friday 15 January 2010.

The man returned the following day with another man and began cleaning the gutters and fascias of the elderly victim’s home. During their time at the address, the victim made the suspects a cup of tea and let them use his toilet.

The suspects then left the victim’s home without completing the work and the elderly gentleman discovered that money had been stolen from his house.

Detective Inspector Ceri Hughes of Rumney CID said,

“We are appealing to anyone with information, or anyone who saw these suspects in the Llanrumney area last weekend, on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 January to contact us.

“You may have seen a man, or two men, carrying a silver-coloured ladder in the Llanrumney area. We know the suspects were last seen on Saturday 16 January, at around midday, walking down Bampton Road towards Burnham Avenue, each carrying a small silver-coloured ladder.

“Or maybe you have been canvassed by these people for similar proposed work or maybe an elderly neighbour has also been targeted by these men and has shared this information with you. If so, please contact us.”

The descriptions of the suspects are:

Suspect 1: Male, white, 5ft 8’ to 5ft 10’ in height, aged in his early twenties, slim build, ginger short hair, clean shaven, casually dressed in clean clothes and spoke with an Irish accent.

Suspect 2: Male, white, slim build, dark brown hair of medium length, 5ft 8’ to 5ft 10’ in height.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Rumney CID on telephone number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
