A North Wales Police initiative saw pupils from Ysgol Y Gader join the Dolgellau walking group on a sponsored charity walk recently and raise over £100.
Meirionnydd CBM Support officer, Dewi Wynne arranged for 10 schoolchildren to walk with the town’s walking group, led by Ann Jones, to encourage links between young and older members of the community.
He said that apart from the initiative the walk was also a way of raising money for Cancer Research and also helped pupils, who had to organise an event to raise money for a chosen charity, as part of their work for their Welsh Baccalaureate.
The group walked from Arthog to Barmouth and along the prom before returning to school by bus which was provided free of charge by Arriva. The walkers were also treated to fish and chips courtesy of the Mermaid cafe in Barmouth.
PC Wynne and Anne Jones were praised by the pupils for organising the day and presenting them with a cheque for £25 towards the cause.
Dewi said that the event had gone very well and feedback had been excellent with pupils enjoying mixing with the older people.
He said: “I was really pleased with the response. One pupil said I’ve had some of the best conversations ever! Older people are pretty awesome.”
