Police issue warning following suspicious phone calls – Blackwood

Gwent PoliceGwent Police are issuing a warning following reports of suspicious phone calls in the Blackwood area.

One resident in the Oakdale area reported yesterday, 14th December, that she received a call at 4am yesterday morning from someone purporting to be from Welsh Water.  The caller said that the water supply at the address would be turned off between 6am and 1pm that day and asked if she would be at home during this time.  When the resident said she would be, the caller apologised and hung up.

Another resident in the Cwmfelinfach area reported yesterday that she had received a call last week from someone purporting to be from the Fire Service.  The caller said that they needed to come round to check the fire alarm at the address.  The resident did not confirm a time or a date for the visit and ended the call.  She then contacted her local fire station and fire fighters confirmed that they didn’t make the call.

Police officers are advising anyone who receives such calls to only give personal information or confirm a time and date for a visit over the phone if you are absolutely certain that the identification of the caller is genuine.  Never give details of times when your house will be unoccupied.

Residents are advised to be extra vigilant.  If they see any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood or receive any calls which they may consider to be suspicious they should contact police as soon as possible on 101.  In an emergency always dial 999.
