Pontypridd officer to represent UK in marathon

Criminals in Pontypridd beware – one of the country’s speediest police officers is on patrol in the area.

Marathon runner Pc Kelly Morgan has been selected to take part in the European Marathon Championships after breaking into the top five of fastest police women in the UK.

“Running is something I do for pleasure but it also benefits me in my work,” she said.

Kelly, from Nelson, has been chosen to represent the UK Police Team at the European Marathon Championships in Prague next month.

All police forces in Europe take part and she is one of five runners chosen in the UK due to her recent finishing times, having completed last year’s London Marathon in 3 hours 11 minutes.

Kelly, a response officer covering the Taff area of South Wales Police, has also found that her speedy skills have come in handy when chasing suspected criminals.

“I had recently done a 20-mile race in Gloucester and then came into work for my 3pm shift,” said Kelly who often runs back and fore to work in Pontypridd in a bid to keep fit.

“Almost immediately a call came over the radio that a man had been threatening violence outside a house in Ynysbwl and was last seen running into the nearby woods.

“I ended up chasing him for about three quarters of a mile. I wasn’t expecting to be running quite so soon after the morning race but thankfully he was caught, arrested and charged.”
