Poppies Appear All Over City Ahead of Rememberance Sunday

Ahead of Rememberance Sunday, Cardiff Council has been working with the Royal British Legion and placed banners in a number of prominent postions across the city centre to remind people of the importance of the poppy appeal.

Poppy displays have also been planted in hanging baskets near Cardiff Central Station and a Royal British Legion advert promiting the chairty will appear on the big screen in The Hayes from this week.

The Royal British Legion poppy appeal is there to help support armed forces personal and their families. The 2010 Poppy Appeal focuses on helping the Afghan generation of the British Armed Forces now, and for the rest of their lives.

This year Cardiff will once again hold Wales’ National Service for Remembrance, which will take place at the Welsh National War Memorial in Alexandra Gardens on November 14 and ahead of the service the Wales Field of Remembrance will open at Cardiff Castle on November 4.

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Keith Hyde, said:” As an ex-serviceman myself, I am only too well aware of the rigours of being a member of the armed services and the toll this can take on individuals and their families, particularly when death or injury is caused in the course of their duties.

“It is at times like these, and times of other hardship, that The Royal British Legion comes into its own and is there to support those in need. But of course providing its invaluable and extensive range of services costs money and this is the reason why the success of the annual Poppy Appeal is so vital.

“Already this year, the people of Cardiff and Wales have shown fantastic support for our armed forces when they turned out in their thousands for the Armed Forces Day UK National Event here in the city. The importance of doing likewise for the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal cannot be stressed enough.”

Ruth Henley, a Community Fundraiser, South Wales, for The Royal British Legion states “We are thrilled to have the support once again from Cardiff Council for the 2010 Poppy Appeal. It is a pleasure to work with the City Centre Management team, who have done everything they can to help us promote The Poppy Appeal in the City of Cardiff. We hope that the public will be prompted to give generously and to wear their Poppy with pride. If any one would like to volunteer for the Poppy Appeal or feels that The Royal British Legion may be able to assist them, please call 02920 230216 and we will be able to help.
